Time Outside Can Improve Your Physical and Mental Health

There is nothing that makes you feel quite as good as spending time outdoors, even if it something as simple as taking your dog for a walk in the woods.  For years health experts have made claims about how spending time outside can improve your overall health.  It doesn’t have to be something as extreme as rock climbing, although that is fun too, you can take a hike along a nature trail.  Time outside can improve your physical and mental health…here’s how.

Physical Health

You don’t only improve your physical health by being outside you can also improve things like your self-esteem and confidence.  Being in nature can help rejuvenate your mind, make you more creative and improve your overall outlook on life.  Spending time indoors without ample exercise can create feelings of irritability, exhaustion, make it hard to focus and impulse control can become an issue.  Getting outside can help you regain your focus.

Social Activities

You can take part in social activities that take place outdoors, it allows you to kill two birds with one stone.  You get in some fresh air and social activities at the same time.  You can take part in team sports like baseball, soccer or anything else.  If you’re not a sports nut then try another activity like bird watching, you can join a local club or association and meet people with the same interests as yours.

Emotional Health

Getting outside can help reduce your anxiety, improve stress and reduce symptoms of depression.  Use the time you spend outdoors wisely and spend some of that time exercising.  It will reduce the hormone cortisol and improve your overall mood.  When you’re stressed is when the body reduces cortisol and cortisol is not your friend!  Find the green spaces around your city and take advantage of them for walks and other activities.
